Beaches in Zante

Kalamaki beach is a continuation of the better known Lagana beach and is characterised by being a long, wide stretch of soft sand. Along with other beaches in the area this is a popular beach for the Caretta Caretta turtles to lay their eggs. From the centre of Kalamaki many roads lead to the beach making it easily accessible and parking is available nearby. The beach front restaurants are open until fairly late and are lovely places to enjoy watching the magnificent sunset as it sets over the Ionian Sea.

Alykes has a beautiful stretch of golden sand and is one of the best beaches on the north coast of the island. The beach is ideal for families with young children and swimmers of all levels due to its gently shelving shores and warm waters. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available to hire and there is a good range of beach bars, restaurants and tavernas. You can hire your own boat or take a trip to the Blue Caves and the Shipwreck here.

Alykanas beach is on the coast known as Alykon bay, opposite Alykes beach and is a continuation making it possible to walk between the two. Alykanas beach has a wide range of watersports, fine sand and shallow waters making it perfect for all the family. There is plenty of parking in the vicinity and the beach is easy to drive to. Bars and restaurants are within easy walking reach as is the resort centre of Alykanas.

Argasi beach is a narrow band of sand and shingle stretching for over 1km along the coast so rarely gets crowded. The beach is located in the south- east of the island with many coves ideal for the explorer. A variety of watersports are available for all the family to enjoy. The resort of Argassi developed around the beach, making it compact so all amenities are within easy reach of the beach.

Bouka beach is a secluded small clean sandy beach with shallow waters. Ideal for children as it is safe and clear, also good for snorkelling. Parking is available in the vicinity and there is a snack bar nearby. The beach is close to Tsilivi beach and offers a smaller and quieter alternative to anyone staying in Tsilivi.

Gerakas is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches on Zakynthos and is located on the south coast. It has a long sandy beach and is a nesting place for the endangered loggerhead turtles. Like many of the beaches on this coast it is protected by the National Marine Park. There are no watersports or beach bars available due to the turtles and this helps to maintain the natural beauty of this superb beach.

Laganas is the most famous resort on Zakynthos Island and the beach is a long stretch of golden sand covering around 9km in length. It is believed to be one of the longest beaches in Greece. From the beach you can take a boat trip and experiencethe wonderful sight of the endangered loggerhead turtles (Caretta-Caretta) swimming in its natural habitat. A vast selection of beach bars, tavernas and refreshments are available here and the resort is just a short walk away. The beach is easily accessible with plenty of parking available and is a great beach for couples and youngsters, not for those seeking peace and tranquillity.

Navagio beach, also known as Shipwreck and Smugglers cove, is the most famous sight on Zakynthos and somewhere that must be seen when visiting the island. It is probably the most famous beach in Greece having been photographed and featured in many holiday brochures, travel books and televised advertisements. The beach is only accessible by boat, as it is surrounded by cliffs and driving or walking to the beach is not possible. It can be viewed from land by visiting the platform near the village of Anafonitria which is well signposted. It is possible to take a boat trip from almost anywhere on the island to visit the cove and you certainly won't be disappointed by its white fine sand and crystal clear turquoise water for a refreshing swim.

Porto Koukla is a splendid sandy beach located on the south coast between the resorts of Laganas and Keri. This unspoilt beach has sun loungers and umbrellas and is perfect for anyone seeking a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere. A handful of beach bars and tavernas line the beach and most specialise in traditional Greek cuisine. This beach is a lovely spot from which to watch the magnificent sunset, for a special romantic evening.

Porto Roma beach is named after the famous Zakynthian Alessandro Roma who lived in the area. It is a quiet picturesque little beach with fairly shallow water ideal for swimming. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available here and there is also a very good taverna specialising in Zakynthian cuisine and fish dishes. Anyone arriving at this beach by boat will be able to moor their boat in the small harbour.

Tsilivi beach is a large wide sandy beach with fine golden sand that gently shelves into the sea. It is an ideal family beach as the sand gently shelves into the water making it safe for young children and swimmers of any level. The beach has been awarded the prestigious international Blue Flag award for its exceptional cleanliness and clean clear waters. Watersports are readily available at this beach for hours of family fun with pedaloes, paragliding, Jet Ski's, windsurfing and also sunbeds and parasols for those wanting to relax in the sun. Refreshments are available at this beach and the centre of the resort is nearby with a wide selection of shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants.

Xigia beach is renowned as a natural healing spa due to its high sulphur content giving it a distinctive aroma. Many people with skin conditions, arthritis and other aches and pains travel to this area to bathe in the soothing. The picturesque beach is easily accessible by car and there are a few tavernas in the area although no facilities on the beach.
